Exercise is a great start - doing weight-bearing exercises helps to strengthen your bones. You should also make sure your nutritional status is optimized - check your vitamin D, K, calcium, magnesium, etc. and supplement accordingly.

A great place to start with osteoporosis prevention is ensuring that you are optimizing dietary and/or supplementary intake of the essentials vitamins, minerals & nutrients required for strong and healthy bones. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium balance and bone health, and many Canadians are actually Vitamin D deficient! A simple blood test through your Naturopath or family doctor can help determine if you are deficient in Vitamin D. www.drmaryellentedeschi.com

The best approach for osteoporosis prevention includes a combination of eating a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, taking supplements, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. Consider working with a health professional (or better yet, a health care team) to develop a well-rounded, individualized treatment plan. Your age, functional abilities, current heath status, medical history, family history and personal goals will help determine your specific needs.

As an RMT, I'd like to express the importance of good circulation and exercise to keep your bones healthy and happy. Massage cannot prevent or reverse osteoporosis; it can however treat the symptoms of it. It also promotes lymphatic health and circulation which in turn supports bone health, hopefully slowing down any deterioration. For those with osteo, deep tissue work is not recommended - but massage with gentle techniques + movement are generally beneficial. - yours in health, Anne

Naturopathic doctors strive for individualized care, so the key thing is to examine your lifestyle, family history and present health status with a qualified practitioner. There is no single \"best\" treatment There are a number of effective strategies/treatments to increasing bone density and decreasing osteoporosis risk. Maximal risk reduction can be achieved through a combination of nutrition, lifestyle habits, and dietary supplements, that are safe and personalized for each individual.
