2022-09-20

Your eyes are the window to your world, however, this window is fragile and requires meticulous care.

There are certainly many external reasons why your eyesight could deteriorate including:

  • Age
  • Pollution
  • Allergies
  • Stress
  • Unhealthy habits

Stopping the aging of your eyes is simply not possible, however, you can definitely slow it down. The external factors mentioned previously could be avoided. All you need to do is adopt a few measures and simple tips to keep your eyes healthy.

6 Simple Tips For Healthy Eyes

1. Eat Well, Drink Well

Good eye health starts with good food. Omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision. A well-balanced diet also helps you stay at a healthy weight lowering your odds of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults.

Staying hydrated is also important as your eyes rely on water to help keep them lubricated that in turn keeps them moist.

2. Wear Protective Eye Gear

Protecting your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays is imperative as too much UV exposure boosts your chances of vision-related issues. Wear sunglasses when out in the sun.

Wear eye protection gear when playing certain sports, or working in jobs such as factory work and construction. If your work requires you to work at a computer for hours at a stretch, adopt a few extra precautions.

3. Exercise For Your Eyes

Like you exercise for building certain body parts, you also need to exercise to keep your eyes healthy. Put your eyes through a simple exercise at regular intervals. Make it a habit to do this exercise consistently as it will help guard your eyes against strain and discomfort.

  • Stare at a distant object for 15 seconds
  • Switch your gaze over to a nearer object, and keep staring at it for another 15 seconds.
  • Repeat this cycle 4-5 times
  • Make sure to rest your eyes every 30-40 minutes for at least 15 seconds.

4. Adjust The Lighting

Do not sit under harsh lights or even dim lights for that matter. Adjust the brightness of your devices so that you are comfortable working or browsing on them.

Even staying out in the sun for long can have negative effects on the eyes.

5. Get A Good Night’s Sleep, Every Night

The importance of sleep is innumerable. Getting the recommended amount of sleep of 6-8 hours or whatever works for your body is an easy way to keep your eyes healthy. When you are sleep-deprived, your eyes don’t get adequate time to replenish themselves, becoming strained. This lack of sleep can cause eye spasms and dry eyes.

6. Keep Your Eyes And Eyewear Clean

Bacteria in your eyes can cause an infection with uncomfortable symptoms like itching, swelling, discharge, pain and difficulty seeing. Don’t use old eye makeup. If you wear contacts, make sure you put them on with clean hands and remove them at night even if they’re labelled for long-term wear. Keep your hands clean if you have a habit of touching your eyes often.
