Separating Truth From Fiction In The World Of Dieting

2023-09-05

When talking about weight loss and dieting, there’s a lot of noise on the internet and around. And mostly, most of what you hear doesn’t necessarily work for you. We don’t wish to increase the chatter, rather we are here to bust some myths and separate truth from fiction.

So here are some of the biggest weight loss and dieting myths, lies and misconceptions

  • Skipping meals can help you lose weight fast

It’s totally the opposite as skipping meals slows down your metabolism and makes weight loss harder.

Skipping meals can cause you to gain weight as it may lead to overindulging in unhealthy snacks. Eating small, regular meals helps you regulate your metabolism, keeps away hunger pangs, and give your body a consistent supply of nutrients vital for maintaining a healthy weight.

  • Crash or fad diets are best way to lose weight

Crash diets or fad diets are hard to stick as they’re too restrictive and not a safe way to lose weight.

Such diets require you to have limited foods that may leave you lacking essential nutrients. It can make your body crave foods high in fat and sugar adding to your weight. Eating healthy snacks or having an occasional treat can make it easier to stick to a healthy balanced diet.

  • Eating more salads will lead to weight loss

Salads provides your body a lot of nutrients, however, they don’t necessarily lead to weight loss.

If you mostly eat only salads, you’ll be depriving yourself of the foods you love. It will eventually lead to junk food cravings. And, if you add high-calorie toppings like cheese or creamy dressing, your salad could mar your weight-loss efforts. Instead, opt for healthy toppings.

  • Clean or organic foods promote weight loss

Foods considered organic may be more nutritious and healthy but that does not mean they promote weight loss.

Clean and organic foods consumed on a regular basis can add to your healthy lifestyle but for your weight loss journey you need to be careful about how much and what you eat. Also, be mindful of products that claim to be organic.

  • Supplements help in weight loss

You are mistaken if you think that supplements in any form be it powdered, shake, or liquid can help you lose weight.

Supplements might give you a boost of energy for some time, however, you cannot depend on it for weight loss. However, when people depend on supplements to help them lose weight, they become more conscious of what they eat and it may have a modest effect on weight loss.

  • Carbs are bad for you

Carbohydrates are an important part of a balanced diet and your body’s preferred source of energy.

Cutting carbs from your diet is not a good weight loss technique. Eating healthy carbs in moderation can not only help maintain body weight, but also improve indigestion and reduce your risk for chronic diseases.

  • Drinking more water helps you lose weight

Water doesn’t make you lose weight, what it does is keep you hydrated and that in turn supports your weight loss goal.

Sometimes, when you feel hungry you might actually be thirsty. Try drinking a glass of water first when you’re tempted to snack. As water doesn’t have any calories, it’s a healthier option than sugary or caffeinated drinks.
